We collect it, compost it and then use the compost to grow more fruit and vegetables.
Our compost is developed at Marfell’s community garden.
We donate some of the compost to the garden and sell the rest to support our business model.
How it works
We provide a wheelie bin to organisations to collect food waste (we provide advice on what can and can’t go in the bin). We then collect the bin once a week and give you a fresh, clean one. If you prefer you can also ‘self-drop’ by taking your bin to Marfell Community Garden and depositing it in the marked compost bay.
Cost
We recognise these are tough times for business so we offer a 3-month free trial and then a koha system allowing organisations to contribute what they can. We require no long-term commitment - you can opt out at any time.

Who we are
KAItiaki Composting is a social enterprise run by The Bishop’s Action Foundation. We partner with Zeal in Taranaki because our enterprise enables young people to become part of running our service. Before they finish with us they help train the next cohort of young people coming on board. We also partner with local community gardens to ensure our compost benefits local communities too.
Our Story
KAItiaki Composting was originally created by The Bishop’s Action Foundation, Start-Up Taranaki and Zeal as the outcome of a programme supporting young people to understand about social enterprise and explore what is needed to create one. Our original crew of Zeal young people were Caesar, Kanye and Te Ringa. They are still pictured on the front of our site to recognize their input into founding this exciting initiative delivering environmental and social outcome for Taranaki.
Why use our service?
By composting your food waste we prevent it going to landfill and creating harmful gases as it decomposes. We also use the compost we create to grow fresh fruit and veggies for our local communities.
